The AA Hotel of the Year has been named as The BrookLodge & Wells Spa, Macreddin Village, Co. Wicklow. The Award was presented by Tourism Minister Martin Cullen at a special awards ceremony held at the Guinness Storehouse, Dublin on 5th November 2008.
After just nine years in operation Owners Evan, Bernard and Eoin Doyle have turned the hidden Wicklow valley into a stunning seat of luxury, catering for mind and body. The levels of innovation and dynamism together with faultless service have consistently impressed AA inspectors. This hotel has risen to the top of the industry demonstrating the highest of standards in hotel keeping, and the AA is delighted to be able to pay them the ultimate compliment.
The Award is perhaps the most prestigious accolade that an Irish Hotel can achieve and marks out BrookLodge as one of the finest in the country.
The luxurious country house hotel is situated in Macreddin Village comprising of a pub, cafe, organic bakery, smokehouse, equestrian centre and Actons Country Pub & Brewery where their very own beer is brewed and served. Comfort predominates among restful lounges, well-appointed bedrooms and mezzanine suites. Activities available to guests are off road driving, field and clay pigeon shooting, angling canoeing, walking and trekking. The other recent addition is the Paul McGinley designed Golf Course, which opened on 1st July 2008.
One of the most unusual aspects of this Wicklow gem is its commitment to the environment - BrookLodge has been a pioneer in this field. The very best produce is sourced for the hotel, which supports local quality organic food producers. The Strawberry Tree is the only organic licensed restaurant in Ireland (and has been since November 2004). The Hotel Bakery is also licensed as is the Herb Garden and the woodland adjacent to the hotel. Other green initiatives at the hotel are a Bio Digester to compost all dry food waste, all wet food waste is processed into Bio Fuel for the generation of electricity. The Hotel has also invested heavily in providing its own facility to treat effluent and a Wood Chip Plant to provide all the current heat for the building and for the Spa and Pool. The new conference centre, bedrooms and function rooms uses Geo-Thermal heat sourced from underground springs to generate heat for the buildings.
The Wells Spa offers extensive treatments and is a haven for guests to be pampered. The hotel also has two restaurants the recent addition being La Taverna Armento, which serves Southern Italian cuisine and the AA 2 Rosette award-winning Strawberry Tree Restaurant, a romantic setting, which specialises in organic and wild foods. All designed to transport you a million miles away from the stresses of daily life.
